Who sold Valentine's day?

How did valentine's day become the multimillion to billions generating business it is now from sacrificing goats and dogs in ancient times? We all know its history of origin, but how did it start being marketed?

It is believed to be with a mass postcard production done by Esther A Holland in the 1840s, who got the inspiration from a lacey love note she received from England and soon it became popular in the US. Since then it was a nonstop road, from a heart-shaped box of chocolate being introduced in the 1860s, pieces of candy with love phrases in 1866 by Daniel Chase, Hallmark card selling Valentine’s Day gift cards in 1910, and the creation of Valentine’s Day cards in 1913.

The strategy has been getting creative as ever incorporating a much broader list of items and it's one of the intelligent marketing strategies to play on point, with an average spending per person being $134.

And I have to ask, are you also caught on this web? Or are you one of the voices preaching about it being commercialized out of context and losing its true touch to the core of its purpose in the first place?
